ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATIONS & TARGETS
- We are ISO 14001 certified, ensuring our Environmental Team conducts regular audits to identify opportunities for improvement and mitigate risks, including through a robust Pollution Incident Response Plan reviewed annually.
- Gunwharf Quays contributes to Landsec’s ambitious goal of zero waste to landfill and at least 75% waste recycling across the portfolio. Remarkably, we achieved a 75% recycling and reuse rate four years ahead of schedule, up from 48% in just two years.
- Our sustainability efforts also support Landsec’s aim to reduce energy intensity by 40% by 2030 (compared to the 2013/14 baseline), aided by one of Europe’s largest arrays of solar panels on a shopping centre roof.
KEY INITIATIVES
We take practical steps every day to care for the environment. Here are some of the ways we’re making a difference:
- 100% renewable electricity: All the electricity we use, from lighting and lifts to escalators and car parks, is sourced from renewables like wind and solar. Our 800 solar panels on-site play a big part in this.
- Zero waste to landfill: Over 80% of our waste is recycled, including 150,000 coffee cups thanks to our dedicated recycling bins.
- Green accolades: We’ve won the National Recycling Awards’ ‘National Retail Recycler of the Year’ twice and an International Green Apple Award for our waste management programme.
- Electric vehicle charging: We provide 12 EV charging points, with plans to install more to support greener travel.
- Eco-friendly operations: Upgrades to our cleaning and waste management equipment, alongside a review of cleaning practices, have minimised environmental impact.
- Sustainable partnerships: Many of our brands actively support our recycling scheme, efficiently sorting waste. Plus, many restaurants participate in the Refill Me campaign, offering free water refills for reusable bottles.
- Biogas Use: 15% of the gas we purchase is biogas, used by restaurants on-site for cooking.
BIOVERSITY PROGRAMME
We’re also nurturing local biodiversity:
- Created a meadow with 200 sqm of wildflowers.
- Installed two hibernaculums to support insect and bug populations.
Sustainability isn’t just a goal – it’s an ongoing journey, and we’re committed to finding new ways to make a positive impact on our planet.
