Gunwharf Quays, like all of the Landsec sites, is BS OHSAS 18001 Certified (Health and Safety), and also IS0 14001 Certified. ISO 14001 requires our Environmental Team to undertake regular Audits of our buildings to ensure they strive for continued improvement with regard to sustainability issues. This detailed audit process also highlights any potential environmental risks and helps to ensure they are prevented, this includes a Pollution Incidence Response Plan that is checked and reviewed on an annual basis.
Landsec has a target of zero waste to landfill and at least 75% recycled across their portfolio by 2020. Gunwharf Quays has over the last two years increased its combined recycling and reuse performance from 48% to 75%, four years ahead of the company target. The Centre has been working with a number of charities and social enterprise partners to ensure waste materials can be reused and recycled wherever possible.
Besides the targets mentioned above, we strive to prevent pollution and contamination where possible, maximise the efficiency of natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Gunwharf Quays has one of the largest arrays of solar panels on a shopping centre in Europe to date, thereby assisting in Land Securities’ target to reduce energy intensity (kWh/m2) by 40% by 2030 compared to a 2013/14 baseline.
In 2015 Gunwharf Quays won the National Recycling Awards ‘National Retail Recycler of the Year’ title for the second time, and an ‘International Green Apple’ award for our Waste Management Programme.
